Technology is intervention by design. As such it is a vital part of everyday living and an integral component of the modern school curriculum.

At Wellington College we encourage the use of practical and intellectual resources to develop products and systems that will enhance every day human activity. Students discuss needs and opportunities with clients and resolve these through dialogue and modelling. Adaptation and innovation are at the heart of Technological practice. It is our belief that Technology is never static but influenced by and in turn impacts on the cultural, ethical, environmental and economic conditions of the day.
Technology offers courses that explore a variety of hard materials and composites. Design and Visual Communications (Graphics) is taught as a separate option alongside Technology from Year 11. Students can study for NZ Scholarship in both Technology and Graphics, and all students are encouraged to pursue their interests in either Technology or Graphics through to Year 13.
The Department’s outstanding success in the Young Designer Awards has been consistent for many years.
Joseph: “This is the most exciting subject I study. Where I can solve real problems and use such a wide range of tools and equipment.”
Owen: “I have learned several problem solving techniques which I have applied to the project. Thinking how it will work is simple compared to producing it.”
James: “Technology is an all embracing subject where you can incorporate knowledge and experiences from subjects like Physics and Calculus. My Magna air hockey table has worked really well. Technology has taught me to be constructively critical of the world around me. I can contribute successfully and meaningfully.”
Technology is a creative, purposeful activity, aimed at meeting needs and opportunities through the development of products, systems or environments. Knowledge, skills, and resources are combined to help solve practical problems. Technological practice takes place within, and is influenced by, social contexts.
Outcomes will range from concepts and model making to final outcomes or multi unit construction and production. Where appropriate, solutions will be developed in partnership with wider stakeholders. This strand focuses on students developing an understanding of artefacts, systems and environments. This understanding should come through Technological practice and general reading and exploration at home.
